Job summary

Birdon America Inc. in Elmwood, LA seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design of marine systems across program lifecycles, ensuring targets for cost, schedule, and performance.

You will develop drawings, specifications, and analyses while coordinating with subcontractors and customers. The role requires a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and at least 10 years of experience, including 5+ years in marine work, with CAD proficiency and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
• 10 years of mechanical engineering experience with at least 5 years in marine related work.
• Experience with government procurement and contracting.
• Proficient in piping system design and analysis (fuel, seawater, freshwater, fire, sanitary).
• HVAC system design knowledge.
• Experience with marine propulsion drivelines and prime movers.
• Experience with ship deck equipment systems (cranes, winches, davits).
• Knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities (ABS, DNV, GL, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO).
• CAD/AutoCAD proficiency and MS Office skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical system designs (Systems Engineering, Mechanical, Piping, Propulsion, Machinery) for assigned programs.
• Create specifications and design artifacts (drawings, procurement specs, calculations, analyses, interfaces).
• Develop complex system development and engineering reports and detailed drawings.
• Prepare technical reports including site surveys, test procedures, test reports, trade studies and white papers.
• Review designs for accuracy and adherence to contract requirements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex piping, propulsion, and deck machinery issues.
• Coordinate with engineering leadership to allocate resources to milestones.
• Serve as technical lead for subcontract design execution and change adjudication.
• Support Engineering Change Proposals.
• Maintain technical relationships with customer and program office.
• Deliver detailed technical program reviews to internal and external customers.
• Contribute to CI initiatives and create work instructions and best practices.
