Job summary

Goodwill of Greater Washington is seeking a maintenance technician responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing, carpentry, and painting in various facilities within the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

The role requires driving between sites, on‑call evenings/weekends/holidays, and adherence to safety and codes. Strong problem‑solving and coordination skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two to four years’ recent experience in maintenance of a multi‑unit commercial building or retail environment that required driving between work locations.
  • Proficient in plumbing, carpentry and general maintenance and repair in a commercial setting.
  • Must have own reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license and be able to drive to any location within the Goodwill market area.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Outlook (email and calendar).
  • Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions.

Responsibilities

  • With minimal supervision, responsible for installations, maintenance and repairs of plumbing, carpentry, painting, fixture repair and assembly, as well as other general handyman tasks in retail stores, warehouses, office buildings, and other facilities as needed.
  • Updates the computerized maintenance management system in a timely manner as assigned tasks are completed or issues arise that prevent completion.
  • Answers and dispatches emergency calls as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor during on‑call periods.
  • Uses company accounts to purchase repair and maintenance materials as needed. Maintains and stocks supply inventory; gathers and compiles information.
  • Performs all assigned tasks in a safe, workmanlike manner, and in accordance with any local building code requirements.
  • Tracks mileage and other reimbursable expenses and submits a properly completed expense report at least once per month.
  • This position requires daily travel within the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.
  • Possesses flexibility in work hours and the ability to work occasional nights and/or weekends as required by a published on‑call schedule.

Job description

Responsible for performing installations, maintenance and repairs of plumbing, carpentry, and painting work in retail stores, warehouses, office buildings, and other facilities. Occasionally responsible for providing guidance to other technicians. This associate must have reliable personal transportation and be able to travel daily to various locations within the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The associate will perform strenuous work on a regular basis. The Associate must be able to work a regular Monday-Friday daytime schedule and a rotating on-call schedule that includes evenings, weekends and/or holidays (including answering and dispatching emergency calls as needed). This position is responsible and will be held accountable for behaving in accordance with divisional and organizational RISE values and expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Identifies, maintains and implements solutions for assigned tasks. Evaluates problematic systems of facilities and determines what repair services need to be performed by others. Provides suggestions and recommendations as needed.

  • Answers and dispatches emergency calls as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor during on‑call periods.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides senior-level guidance and training.
  • Administers and services the core locking system that is installed at all locations.
  • Clocks in and out for work shifts and lunch on the company’s timekeeping system.
  • Completes required monthly safety training and any other required training.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Required Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two to four years’ of recent experience in maintenance of a multi‑unit commercial building or retail environment that required driving between work locations.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance and repair in a commercial setting.
  • General understanding of various Federal, State and County codes and regulations involving construction, installation, fire, safety and sanitation.
  • Must have own reliable transportation and a valid “clear” driver’s license and be able to drive to any location within the Goodwill market area.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Outlook (email and calendar).
  • Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, advanced studies preferred.
  • Five or more years of previous experience in general carpentry, plumbing, painting, and other general maintenance activities.
