Job summary

UCAR is seeking a Machinist-Instrument Maker Level III to perform advanced machining for research instrumentation in Design and Fabrication Services. You will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop manufacturable solutions and mentor other shop personnel.

The role requires extensive CNC/CAM programming, GD&T expertise, and leadership on fabrication projects with a strong emphasis on safety and quality, while working on-site three days per week in a hybrid environment.

Qualifications

• Completion of a relevant machine trade vocational program, and at least six years of high precision machine trade experience.
• Advanced skill in the Machinist and Instrument Maker trades for complex, close-tolerance components.
• Extensive knowledge of GD&T, tolerances, inspection techniques.
• Ability to lead designated fabrication projects and mentor shop staff.
• Familiarity with OSHA safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Plans, programs, sets up, operates, and troubleshoots CNC and manual machine tools to produce complex high-precision instruments and components.
• Reviews CAD models, drawings, specifications for manufacturability and improvements.
• Provides technical guidance and may act as project leader on designated shop projects; coordinates fabrication activities, status, and estimates.
• Recommends tooling, equipment, and process improvements; ensures work meets project requirements and safety standards.
• Adheres to shop safety practices and OSHA regulations.
