Job summary

Karman Space & Defense in Arlington, WA is seeking a Machinist III to independently set up and operate advanced 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC centers on mission-critical aerospace hardware.

You'll machine exotic alloys like Inconel and titanium, perform GD&T-based inspection, and collaborate with Engineering, Programming, and Quality to ensure flawless first-piece and in-process results. First shift, competitive compensation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 5+ years CNC machining in precision manufacturing.
• Able to set up/operate 3–5 axis machines with minimal supervision.
• Experience on Inconel, titanium, stainless steel, copper.
• Conversational Fanuc/Siemens programming.
• Basic CAM with Mastercam/ESPRIT/CATIA.
• Experience with AS9100 quality system.
• Strong GD&T and blueprint reading.
• Knowledge of tooling, fixturing, probing, feeds and speeds.
• Proficient with precision metrology equipment.

Responsibilities

As a Machinist III, you will independently set up and operate advanced 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining centers to manufacture complex, mission-critical aerospace hardware. You will own machining execution from setup through dimensional verification, frequently working on one-of-one and low-volume components manufactured from difficult and high-value materials. This position requires advanced machining judgment, strong troubleshooting capabilities, and the ability to work collaboratively with Programming, Engineering, and Quality. The Machinist III reports to the Machine Shop Foreman and provides technical guidance to less-experienced machinists.

Responsibilities

• Independently set up and operate complex 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining centers.
• Prove out setups for new or unproven components in collaboration with Programming and Engineering.
• Machine one-of-one, prototype, and low-volume flight hardware using Inconel, titanium, stainless steel, copper, and other exotic alloys.
• Perform conversational programming and controller-level G-code and M-code edits using Fanuc and/or Siemens controls.
• Install and qualify fixtures, workholding, cutting tools, probes, machine datums, and related setup components.
• Interpret engineering drawings, models, setup documentation, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements.
• Perform first-piece and in-process dimensional verification while monitoring tool wear, machining conditions, and process stability.
• Independently troubleshoot machining, tooling, setup, and dimensional issues in partnership with Programming, Engineering, and Quality.
• Exercise stop-work authority when conditions may place personnel, equipment, or hardware at risk.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced machinists.
  
  

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 5+ years of CNC machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to independently set up and operate complex 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining centers with minimal supervision.
• Experience machining one-of-one, prototype, or low-volume, high-value components.
• Experience machining Inconel, titanium, stainless steel, copper, and/or other exotic alloys.
• Conversational programming experience using Fanuc and/or Siemens controls.
• Basic CAM experience using Mastercam, ESPRIT, CATIA, or comparable software.
• Experience working within an AS9100 or equivalent quality management system.
• Strong blueprint-reading skills and practical knowledge of GD&T.
• Strong knowledge of cutting tools, workholding, fixturing, probing, feeds, and speeds.
• Proficiency using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain composure while machining one-of-one and high-value aerospace hardware.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Experience with large-format 5-axis machining.
• Experience machining additively manufactured components.
• Previous experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to less-experienced machinists.
• Advanced experience troubleshooting complex machining, tooling, dimensional, and process-related issues.
