Sternell Systems in Melville, NY is seeking a Senior Machinist to set up and operate manual and CNC machines, producing precision parts per drawings. You will read complex blueprints, apply GD&T, and ensure extreme dimensional accuracy for military/space grade components.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years in a machine shop or a related associate’s degree with 6+ years, plus strong Haas CNC and metrology skills. Onsite, full-time position with 5S adherence and continuous improvement focus.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma with 8+ years of relevant experience, or an Associate’s degree with 6+ years of experience.
  • 5+ years in a machine shop with strong knowledge of machining practices, setups, tooling, and materials.
  • Experience with Haas CNC equipment and precision metrology tools.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machine tools (lathes, mills, drills, grinders, Haas CNC) to produce precision parts.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints and GD&T documentation.
  • Maintain tight tolerances and inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other tools.
  • Determine required machinery, sequences, setups, and machining strategies for each job.
  • Select cutting tools and maintain tooling for grinding and sharpening operations.
  • Maintain 5S standards and a clean, organized shop environment.
  • Monitor shop activities and identify needs for new equipment, tooling, or process improvements.

Overview

Job Title: Senior Machinist

Job Location: Melville, NY (100% onsite)Salary: $40.00-$50.00/hr DOE

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machine tools—including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, and Haas CNC machinery to produce precision parts, tools, and fixtures from drawings, sketches, and operation sheets.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints and engineering documentation, applying shop mathematics and GD&T.
  • Consistently achieve extremely tight dimensional tolerances required in military/space grade manufacturing.
  • Determine required machinery, sequence of operations, setups, and machining strategies.
  • Select proper cutting tools for each operation, including grinding, sharpening, and maintaining tooling.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other inspection tools to verify conformance.
  • Maintain excellent attention to detail, organization, and adherence to 5S standards to keep a clean and efficient shop environment.
  • Monitor ongoing shop activities and identify needs for new equipment, tooling, work holding/fixturing, and process improvements.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience or associate’s degree with a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in a machine shop environment with strong knowledge of machining practices, setups, tooling, and material characteristics (metals and plastics)
  • Experience with Haas CNC equipment
  • Proficiency in MasterCam and/or Fusion 360 for machining/CAM programming
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to hold and verify tight tolerances using precision metrology tools
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and adherence to 5S/LEAN methodologies
  • Excellent communications skills, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
