Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin’s McDonald Observatory seeks a Machine Shop Supervisor to lead the on-campus machine shop, coordinating schedules, fabrication, and maintenance for precision parts. You will oversee CNC and manual machines, ensure safety and quality, manage tooling and material acquisition, and advise customers on fabrication solutions.

Required are extensive hands-on machining experience, supervisory background, and proficiency with MasterCAM, SolidWorks, or Inventor.

Qualifications

• Technical or vocational training in machining or related field.
• Minimum 10 years in precision machining/mechanical/electrical/electronic trades.
• 2+ years supervisory experience managing staff and workflow.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily operations of the machine shop and oversee project progress.
• Source parts, tools, and materials; drive UT vehicle for pickups as needed.
• Operate machine tools and maintain CAD drawing files for parts.
• Coordinate shop maintenance and tool repair; assist with telescope equipment support.
