Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Technical Staff Assistant IV in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at UT Main Campus. You will support teaching labs in the student machine shop, maintain equipment inventories, and assist faculty and students with setup, operation, and repair of machine tools.

The role requires hands-on machining experience, proficiency with CNC Haas machines, G-code, and 3D CAD software.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or GED is required.
• Five years of experience as an instrument maker or machinist beyond the apprentice level.
• Experience with CNC machining using Haas machines with 4th axis mill and tool room lathe.
• Understanding of G code programming and Mastercam software.
• Experience with 3D modeling software (Fusion 360 or SolidWorks/Mastercam).
• Experience with abrasive cutting and 3D printing, laser/plasma cutting, Haas 4th Axis Mill or Mazak Lathe.
• Any welding experience and valid driver’s license with clean record.

Responsibilities

• Maintain flow of curriculum supporting teaching labs in student machine shop.
• Inventory and maintain lab equipment and consumables.
• Assist TAs, students and professors with lab setup and hands-on lab support.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment.
• Coordinate purchase of materials for teaching labs.
• Co-Responsible for teaching Machine Shop certification classes.
• May teach ME 350 course for undergraduates.
• Fill Professional Machine Shop work orders.
• Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, drill presses and related tools.
• Lay out fabrication plans from rough sketches and verbal instructions.
