Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin's McDonald Observatory seeks a Machine Shop Supervisor to oversee scheduling, operations, and staff in the observatory's machine shop. You will program CNC machines, operate manual tools, ensure safety, quality, and on-time delivery of precision parts.

Responsibilities include coordinating procurement, advising customers on fabrication issues, and assisting with other tasks as needed. Strong leadership and hands-on machining skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Technical or Vocational School training or equivalent.
• 10+ years in precision machining or related mechanical/electrical trades.
• 2+ years supervision, scheduling and supply management.
• 3+ years operating mills, lathes, grinders, drills.
• 3+ years maintaining and repairing machine shop equipment.
• Knowledge of CNC programming and G-code; MasterCAM experience.
• Proficient in CAD tools: SolidWorks or Inventor.
• Ability to hold tight tolerances with precision measuring tools.
• Strong written/verbal communication; organized with multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily operations of the machine shop and monitor progress on mechanical projects.
• Locate and source parts, tools, and materials; drive UT vehicle to fetch items as needed.
• Operate machine tools as required and maintain updated mechanical drawings.
• Coordinate tool repair and shop maintenance.
• Assist Astronomy Department with equipment repair and maintenance and maintain vehicle logs.
