Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Machine Shop Supervisor for the McDonald Observatory on UT Austin's Main Campus. This role oversees scheduling, operations, maintenance, and supervision of the observatory's machine shop.

Responsibilities include coordinating daily shop activities, communicating progress, and advising customers on fabrication issues. Proficiency in CNC programming (MasterCAM) and CAD tools (SolidWorks/Inventor) is required, with emphasis on safety and quality.

Qualifications

• At least 10 years of precision machining, electrical or electronic trade experience with equipment maintenance.
• Two years of supervisory experience in managing employees, workflow, and supplies.
• Experience operating mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses; able to train others.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily operations of the engineering machine shop to ensure project progress.
• Communicate project status, issues, and shop needs clearly to stakeholders.
• Source tools, parts, and materials from external suppliers as needed.
• Drive UT vehicle to drop off and pick up parts at off-campus locations.
• Provide labor and material cost estimates for mechanical projects.
• Operate machine tools to fabricate parts and maintain CAD drawings.
