Job summary

Zest for Tech in New York City is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to shape the next generation of agentic AI systems. The role combines ownership of core platform capabilities across search, retrieval, and multi-agent orchestration with hands-on development in production environments.

You will design scalable pipelines for document processing, advance knowledge graphs, and drive end-to-end experiments from concept to rollout, joining a Series B startup at a pivotal scaling moment.

Qualifications

Senior Machine Learning Engineer | NYC 3 day/week in their Lower Manhattan office | up to $250k

We're working with a Series B startup with strong product-market fit and backing from top-tier VCs. Having proven their product in the market, they're now focused on scaling. This role is an opportunity to shape how sophisticated agentic systems get designed, built, and shipped to production at a key inflection point for the company.

What you'll do

• Take ownership of core AI platform capabilities spanning search, retrieval, and multi-agent systems
• Lead the design and development of multi-agent architectures, defining new agent capabilities and collaboration patterns
• Build and scale document processing pipelines, from ingestion and parsing to chunking, indexing, and structured data extraction
• Enhance search and retrieval through improvements in ranking, query understanding, and question-answering
• Grow knowledge graph capabilities that support reasoning, retrieval, and entity relationships
• Lead high-impact AI initiatives from initial concept through experimentation and production rollout
• Build evaluation frameworks and experimentation practices to measure and improve system quality
• Write production-grade code and help shape engineering best practices across the team

What you'll bring

• 7+ years building and deploying ML/AI systems in production Solid expertise in agentic systems, LLM applications, and orchestration frameworks
• Deep hands-on experience with document processing pipelines: parsing, chunking, indexing, and structured extraction
• Experience designing scalable distributed systems, ideally with Kubernetes Familiarity with knowledge graphs, provenance graphs, and entity relationship modeling
• Background in search, ranking, NLP, recommendation systems, or large-scale ML infrastructure
• Strong engineering skills in Python, Go, or similar languages, with a production mindset
• Track record of leading complex, ambiguous projects to real business impact
• Analytical, product-minded approach grounded in data-driven decisions
