Senior Litigation Associate Regulatory Law

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Litigation Associate to join a sophisticated Regulatory Law practice in San Francisco, California. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with 6+ years of litigation or regulatory experience who is looking to take on greater responsibility, work directly with clients, and participate in complex, high-impact regulatory matters.

The successful candidate will work closely with experienced partners on regulatory investigations, enforcement actions, government inquiries, administrative proceedings, and related litigation. The role offers meaningful responsibility from matter inception through resolution, with opportunities to lead key workstreams and develop strategic legal solutions for clients facing significant regulatory and operational challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage regulatory matters and individual litigation components with increasing independence.
• Represent businesses and organizations in state and federal regulatory investigations and enforcement actions.
• Draft responses to government inquiries, enforcement actions, administrative pleadings, and related legal documents.
• Handle government inquiries, subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and other regulatory requests.
• Conduct and oversee discovery, legal research, briefing, and motion practice in regulatory proceedings.
• Participate in agency interviews, administrative hearings, mediations, and client strategy sessions.
• Advise clients on regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and potential enforcement exposure.
• Assist with challenges to agency action, including writ petitions and related proceedings.
• Handle appellate matters arising from agency decisions and regulatory proceedings.
• Develop legal analysis and strategies involving evolving statutory and regulatory frameworks.
• Provide pre-litigation strategic counseling regarding regulatory exposure and enforcement risks.
• Work closely with partners on regulatory strategy, case development, and matter management.
• Communicate directly with clients, regulators, government representatives, and opposing counsel.
• Assume ownership of key workstreams while contributing to efficient and effective matter management.
• Manage matters involving expedited proceedings, parallel enforcement exposure, and significant financial or operational stakes.

Required Qualifications:

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• 6+ years of litigation or regulatory experience in state and/or federal court or before administrative agencies.
• Experience handling regulatory investigations, enforcement actions, government inquiries, or administrative proceedings.
• Experience with regulatory litigation, government-facing disputes, compliance counseling, or related matters.
• Training at a leading law firm, litigation boutique, government agency, or regulatory body is preferred.
• Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
• Sound professional judgment and the ability to analyze complex statutory and regulatory frameworks.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and competing deadlines.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with experienced partners and lean legal teams.
• Strong client communication and relationship management skills.
• Interest in regulatory enforcement and government-facing litigation, including attorneys seeking to deepen their practice in these areas.
• Active membership in the California Bar, or ability to obtain admission promptly.
• Government agency experience or judicial clerkship is a plus.
