Job summary

University of Michigan Information and Technology Services (ITS) seeks a Senior Linux Server Engineer to join the Systems Operations group. You will engineer and support core Linux infrastructure, collaborating with the ITS Container Service team and leveraging automation and cloud-native approaches.

You will report to the Linux Infrastructure Engineering Manager. This role is local to Ann Arbor with potential hybrid/remote work as determined by the department.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science or related field.
• At least five years of enterprise Linux experience (RHEL/Ubuntu) both on‑prem and cloud.
• Experience writing Python or Bash automation scripts.
• Strong root-cause analysis, log analysis, and performance monitoring skills.
• Foundational knowledge of storage (LVM, NFS), DNS, SSH, and OS hardening.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily Linux system administration across on‑prem and cloud.
• Automate deployment and configuration management procedures.
• Diagnose incidents with RCA and implement long-term remediations.
• Design scalable, secure infrastructure with project teams.
• Monitor performance, plan capacity, and enforce security hardening.
• Support DR planning, backups, and restoration.
• Mentor junior team members and contribute to technical leadership.
