Job summary

University of Michigan is seeking a Senior Linux Server Engineer to join the Systems Operations group. This role focuses on engineering and supporting core Linux infrastructure, collaborating with the Container Service team, and leveraging automation for cloud-native systems.

You will work with RHEL/Ubuntu across on-premise and cloud platforms, reporting to the Linux Infrastructure Engineering Manager. The position offers hybrid work options and local engagement in Ann Arbor, MI.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in CS/IT or related field.
• Minimum of five years of progressive Linux engineering experience across on-premise and cloud environments.
• Experience writing Python or Bash scripts to automate tasks and workflows.
• Strong ability to perform root-cause analysis, log analysis, and incident restoration.
• Knowledge of LVM, NFS, DNS, SSH, and OS hardening/security standards.
• Experience leading projects or mentoring teammates.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily support and administration for RHEL, Ubuntu, and other Linux distributions across on-premise and cloud platforms.
• Develop, automate, and document procedures to install, patch, configure, manage, and maintain Linux OS using configuration management tools.
• Research, diagnose, and resolve complex incidents, performing RCA and long-term remediations.
• Collaborate with project teams to design scalable, secure infrastructure aligned with standards and vendor requirements.
• Proactively monitor system performance, manage capacity planning, and conduct security hardening and vulnerability remediation.
• Support disaster recovery planning, backup operations, and system restoration processes to ensure continuous availability.
• Demonstrate leadership and mentor junior team members.
