Job summary

Illinois Attorney General seeks a Senior Legislative Liaison to assist the Chief of Legislative Affairs in developing and advancing legislative priorities. The role provides policy guidance and acts as a key liaison with the General Assembly, agencies, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities include monitoring legislation, drafting and negotiating legislative language, preparing briefings and testimony, and representing the OAG at hearings. Travel and occasional outside-hours work are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts degree required; master's or law degree preferred.
• At least 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience in legislative affairs or public policy.
• Experience drafting, reviewing, analyzing, and negotiating legislative language and strategies.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to exercise discretion and good judgement; manage multiple complex matters in a fast-paced environment.

The position provides legislative analysis and policy guidance and serves as a key liaison with members of the General Assembly, legislative staff, state agencies, interest groups, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing legislation; recommending OAG positions and legislative strategies; coordinating the development and advancement of OAG legislative initiatives; and drafting and negotiating legislative language. The Senior Legislative Liaison represents the OAG at legislative hearings and meetings and prepares briefings, testimony, talking points, bill analyses, and legislative reports.

The position communicates and advocates for OAG legislative priorities, monitors priority legislation, advises leadership on legislative developments, assists with legislative and constituent inquiries, and prepares summaries of enacted legislations. The Senior Legislative Liaison may also coordinate legislative affairs staff and provide guidance and mentorship on legislative matters.

Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor of arts degree, a master's or law degree is preferred, and a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience working in legislative affairs or public policy. Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating legislative strategies to support the passage of bills, and experience reviewing, analyzing, and drafting legislative language is required. Excellent communication skills and the ability to exercise discretion and good judgement, demonstrate problem-solving skills, and manage multiple complex matters in a fast-paced environment are also requirements of the position. Attendance and the ability to maintain strong working relationships with other employees, legislators, and the general public are essential functions of this position. This position requires travel, overnight stays, and occasional work on evenings and weekends.
