Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a lactation consultant to provide comprehensive breastfeeding support for inpatients and outpatients. You will perform independent assessments, develop individualized care plans, and coordinate lactation management with the care team to improve patient outcomes.

You will also educate patients and staff, develop curricula, and stay current with the latest lactation literature and best practices.

Qualifications

• Certification or pending IBLCE examination results required.
• Maintains re-certification and continuing education as required by IBLCE.
• At least 2 years experience in breastfeeding and human lactation preferred.
• Bachelor's Degree preferred; RN licensure preferred.
• BLS for pediatrics and adults required per policy guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Makes lactation rounds as needed to meet clinical lactation needs of inpatients.
• Conducts independent assessments of breastfeeding mother and baby (inpatient/outpatient).
• Designs, implements and evaluates individualized plans of care.
• Coordinates lactation management with staff.
• Provides outpatient clinical assistance for breastfeeding difficulties with care plan and physician communication.
• Evaluates breastfeeding educational materials and products.
• Develops lactation curriculum and teaches classes for patient education.
• Consults with physicians or midwives on special breastfeeding problems.
• Provides inservices for new and existing staff in breastfeeding and human lactation.
• Documents interactions with patients (inpatients/outpatients).
• Assists in policies, procedures and standards aligned with current trends.
• Keeps updated on issues and best practices by attending workshops and reading journals.
