Job summary

NYU Langone Health is seeking a Senior Laboratory Assistant to support day-to-day lab operations, including specimen processing, inventory, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers. The role involves front- and back-end processing, quality checks, and adherence to policy.

Responsibilities include accessioning, receiving supplies, maintaining logs, and assisting with phlebotomy and blood product handling. Strong computer skills and excellent communication are essential.

Qualifications

• High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
• Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid.
• Knowledge of computer applications especially excel and word.
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Screen and accession specimens in the LIS as described in the Lab Assistant Job Description.
• Maintain an adequate supply of all general laboratory items and department reagents; notify supervisor when needed.
• Ensure proper receipt and storage of materials; document deliveries per NYU policy.
• Understand specimen requirements and communicate with providers; document rejections.
• Assure specimen quality prior to processing.
• Call providers to confirm requests and place orders as required.
• Front-end processing of samples: labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport; prepare for analysis.
• Back-end processing for storage and disposal per policy.
• Dispose of all department regulated waste properly.
• Clean work surfaces/equipment per protocols; document as required.
• Maintain temperature/humidity logs for equipment and work areas.
• Answer phones and assist callers with test availability and turnaround time.
• Access automated test platforms to assess status of samples.
• Assist in blood product modification (irradiation, thawing).
• Inventory management of blood products (receiving, stocking, expiration).
• Perform phlebotomy services for inpatients.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
