Job summary

The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration is seeking a Senior Lab Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician IV) to perform advanced testing and evaluations of structural materials. The role requires applying SHA, ASTM, and AASHTO specs to verify compliance and maintaining quality control of lab operations.

Responsibilities include assisting with CCRL/AASHTO sample testing, budgeting with the Team Leader, and mentoring lower-level staff in testing

Qualifications

• Education: high school diploma or equivalent.
• Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work (design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning).
• Selective Qualification: 2.5 years of the required experience must have involved materials laboratory testing and/or sampling.
• Notes: substitution of education for experience is allowed at 30 semester credit hours per year.
• Associate degree in engineering/construction management or surveying meets two years of the requirement.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced testing and evaluations of structural materials such as reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, neoprene, bricks, concrete blocks, and more.
• Apply SHA, ASTM, and AASHTO specifications to assess compliance.
• Provide quality control oversight of laboratory functions and equipment to meet AASHTO R-18 requirements.
• Assist testing of CCRL and AASHTO resource test samples yearly.
• Develop and maintain equipment and training budgets with Team Leader.
• Instruct and train lower-level technicians in testing procedures.
