Role and Responsibilities
This is an intermediate level position involving technician work in a highway materials testing facility. General activities may include operation of laboratory and field‑testing equipment to evaluate material properties; performing testing procedures, entering test data into the appropriate reporting software program or database, and preparing test reports; ensuring the timely calibration and maintenance of the testing equipment; ensuring all work activities are properly and timely planned, documented, and filed.
This position will be working in the Structural Materials Section, Chemistry Laboratory. Specific duties include:
- Prepares and tests samples following ASTM/AASHTO/Florida Test Methods.
- Performs sample preparation and chemical analysis on various pavement marking materials and other product types tested by the chemistry department.
- Evaluates products for approved product list (APL) or random samples by testing and/or analyzing independent laboratory data submitted by manufacturers.
- Assists with the planning and executing of laboratory investigations of traffic control materials.
- Contacts District personnel regarding submitted samples.
- Tests materials to ensure compliance with FDOT specifications.
- Tests highway construction or traffic control materials.
- Assists with revisions to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Calibration and Verification Procedures.
- Performs calibrations and verifications of assigned equipment on schedule.
- Uses computer skills (Excel, Word, etc.) to record data and enter and validate test results in the MAC database in a timely manner.
- Maintains a safe working environment. Prepares and handles hazardous materials (e.g., ammonium nitrate solutions, ammonium hydroxide and acid dilutions) associated with the test.
- Assists with Chemical Inventory and laboratory housekeeping.
- Completes field evaluation of traffic marking materials and provides necessary support for successful field work including planning, coordinating and measurement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
