Job summary

Moderna is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer for Digital Lab Systems to lead automation in the QC laboratory and advance high-throughput workflows. You will design, deploy, and optimize automated systems, integrating instruments, LIMS, and enterprise apps to improve efficiency and data integrity.

The role requires 8+ years in automation, strong programming skills, and experience with Hamilton platforms, REST APIs, and regulated environments.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, biotechnology, robotics, or related field.
8+ years of experience in laboratory automation or robotics.
Experience with liquid handling systems and automation platforms.
Experience integrating systems using APIs, databases, or middleware.
Programming experience in Python, Java, C++, or similar.
Experience with data structures, database design, and LIMS integration.
Exposure to AI/ML applications in laboratory or automation workflows.
Experience with Hamilton platforms (VENUS, BiOS).
Familiarity with web services (REST/SOAP) and distributed systems.
Experience in regulated environments (GCP, GLP, ISO standards).
Knowledge of version control (Git) and Agile methodologies.
Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.

Responsibilities

Lead automation design and implementation in QC laboratory automation.
Develop automated workflows for QC assays using Hamilton platforms and VENUS software.
Deploy integrated automation solutions with dynamic scheduling for lab processes.
Translate manual workflows into scalable automated systems to improve efficiency.
Provide SME support for automation troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
Develop data pipelines and architectures for lab automation data.
Support system integrations via REST APIs and middleware.
Lead AI-enabled and ML-driven lab workflows and decision-support.
Mentor junior engineers and deliver training on automation platforms.
