Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Kubernetes Platform Engineer to support NCCS HPC platform teams. You will operate, expand, and maintain on-prem Kubernetes clusters with a focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

You will mentor engineers and guide platform engineering initiatives across the organization. The role involves working with the Slate Service, RKE2, and related tools, with a possible remote-eligible arrangement in pre-approved locations.

Qualifications

• BS degree in a scientific field and 8+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination.
• Experience with Kubernetes as a cluster administrator for on-prem deployments.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills; ability to work in a team.
• Strong Linux fundamentals and networked computing concepts.
• Experience with code reviews, CI/CD tooling, GitOps, and SCM (e.g. GitLab).
• Ability to define, plan, and implement solutions for small/medium projects.
• Proficiency in scripting with Bash, Python, and Go; on-call rotation experience.

Responsibilities

• Define and implement best practices and standards within the organization.
• Keep the Kubernetes platform reliable, available, and fast.
• Architect solutions to improve reliability, scalability, performance, and efficiency.
• Respond to, investigate, and fix service issues from hardware to application code.
• Coordinate with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems.
• Participate in an on-call rotation providing 24/7 support and maintenance.
• Collaborate with users to help them use Kubernetes.
