Job summary

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Senior Kubernetes Platform Engineer to lead the on-premises Kubernetes infrastructure supporting top-ranked HPC systems. You will secure, scale, and optimize the Slate service and related clusters, collaborating across teams and mentoring engineers.

This remote-eligible role offers a flexible work environment with onsite expectations at ORNL in Oak Ridge, TN, and requires strong Kubernetes

Qualifications

BS degree in a scientific field or equivalent experience with 8+ years in related roles.
Experience with Kubernetes as a cluster administrator for on-premises deployments.
Strong Linux and network fundamentals; ability to manage large, complex environments.
Proficiency with CI/CD tooling, GitLab or similar SCM, and scripting (bash, Python, Go).
Ability to plan, implement, and manage small to medium projects; on-call readiness.

Responsibilities

Operate, implement, and maintain the infrastructure underpinning on-premises Kubernetes clusters with emphasis on scalability and reliability.
Lead technical direction for platform engineering initiatives and mentor a team of engineers.
Define best practices, standards, and risk-mitigated solutions across the organization.
Respond to, investigate, and fix service issues from hardware to application code.
Coordinate with vendors to resolve hardware/software problems and participate in on-call rotations.
Work with users to help them utilize Kubernetes effectively.
