Job summary

Maryland Judiciary in Bel Air, MD seeks a Senior Judiciary Clerk for the Family and Civil Services division. You will process civil case filings, review pleadings, docket information, and assist the public and attorneys at the counter or by phone.

The role requires a High School diploma, at least one year in court operations, proficiency with Odyssey/MDEC, and strong customer service, accuracy, and communication skills. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with telework up to two days weekly.

Essential Job Functions

The Senior Judiciary Clerk processes and maintains civil case filings by reviewing pleadings, typing docket information and scanning documents filed via US Mail or at the counter for Harford County Circuit Court. Assist the public and attorneys by providing information about the status of cases or Clerk’s Office procedures both at the counter and by telephone. Other duties are to index new cases and judgements, issue summonses/writs, and perform cashier functions. The employee would be the lead on all Domestic Violence (DV) cases in that office and in court. The incumbent will be trained as a full Civil Courtroom Clerk as backup.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Enter new cases in Odyssey and ensures that all necessary documents are complete and accurate in accordance with established court procedures before sending them out for service of legal process.
  • Processes and maintains case files by docketing pleadings, issuing summons/writs/etc., tracking motions, processing paperwork, filing paperwork.
  • Greets and assists the general public and court related personnel by way of telephone or in person at the counter to respond to inquiries regarding the proper completion of various court related forms. Receives new cases and pleadings; provides information about the status of cases and/or court procedure. Performs cashier duties.
  • Courtroom clerk duties for all Domestic Violence cases and other civil matters as needed for courtroom coverage. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate May Substitute The Required Work Experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge Of: General office practices, procedures, and equipment. Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary. Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill In: Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently. Typing on a personal computer. Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability To: Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing. Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment. Learn and apply job‑related terminology, policies, procedures, regulations and laws to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data. Appropriately complete forms and provide information to customers. Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc. Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Physical Requirements

Perform all essential functions of this position. Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
