Job summary

Securian Financial in Saint Paul, MN is seeking an experienced software engineer to join the Core Claims team. You will design, develop, and maintain Java-based applications and RESTful services, collaborating with product owners and QA in an agile environment.

You will work with SQL Server, APIs, and cloud tools, participate in code reviews and production support, and contribute to modernization efforts while communicating clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
• 3+ years of software development experience
• Experience developing specifically in Java
• Experience creating and consuming APIs
• Experience with SQL Server
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
• Experience with Github
• Experience with JIRA

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions supporting Core Claims systems, including claims intake, adjudication, and payment processing across multiple markets.
• Build and enhance Java-based applications and services, following established engineering standards and best practices.
• Develop, consume, and support RESTful APIs used by internal and external systems to integrate with Core Claims platforms.
• Write, optimize, and maintain SQL Server queries, stored procedures, and data access logic to ensure data integrity and performance.
• Collaborate closely with product owner, business analysts, quality engineers, and other engineers to deliver high‑quality solutions in an agile environment.
• Participate in code reviews, ensuring readability, maintainability, performance, and security of codebases.
• Support production applications, including troubleshooting issues, performing root‑cause analysis, and implementing fixes to meet reliability and availability expectations.
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, including technical modernization, process improvements, and adoption of new tools or patterns where appropriate.
• Use GitHub for source control and collaboration and JIRA for work tracking, estimation, and sprint planning.
• Effectively communicate technical concepts, design decisions, and issues to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
