Job summary

Cognizant is seeking a Senior Backend Java Engineer (Microservices & Kafka) to join our engineering team. You will design reactive, event-driven backend systems using Java 8+ with Spring Boot or Vert.x, building scalable microservices and robust messaging patterns.

You will work in an Agile environment, own features end-to-end, contribute to architecture decisions, and ensure high availability on cloud-based distributed platforms. Hybrid work in Phoenix, AZ with visa sponsorship not available.

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on experience with Java 8+ (Kotlin optional).
• Proven microservices architecting and RESTful API design.
• Experience with Kafka and messaging systems.
• Experience with Agile development environments.
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, Oracle).
• Exposure to cloud platforms and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java 8+ (or Kotlin).
• Build reactive, microservices-based applications using Spring Boot, Vert.x, Micronaut, or Quarkus.
• Develop and implement event-driven architectures leveraging Kafka, webhooks, and asynchronous APIs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment to deliver high-quality software solutions.
• Contribute to application design, architecture decisions, and technical best practices.
• Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of mission-critical platforms.
• Work with cloud-based and distributed systems to support scalable solutions.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
