PayJunction, based in Santa Barbara, CA, seeks a Software Architect to design and build enterprise features and payment integrations, taking open-ended problems from a blank page to production while continuing to write Java.

You will lead architectural efforts, mentor engineers, and ensure reliable, PCI-compliant solutions across multi-merchant platforms, with options for remote, in-office, or hybrid work.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering with ownership of production systems.
• 5+ years of architecture experience as an Architect, Staff, or Principal Engineer.
• 5+ years of Java experience, including web frameworks and the JVM ecosystem.
• 5+ years mentoring engineers; formal people management not required.
• Experience with AWS, Linux, relational databases, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and observability tools.

Responsabilités

• Lead open-ended initiatives from a blank page to production with Product and Engineering leadership, directing engineers and making key calls.
• Personally design high-risk systems end to end, with clear design docs, requirements, trade-offs, and failure modes.
• Stay hands-on: write production Java each sprint, review PRs promptly, and enforce a robust test strategy for high-risk payment paths.
• Mentor senior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing to raise the team's capability.
• Architect enterprise capabilities such as SSO, RBAC, audit trails, and multi-merchant APIs that won’t break with upgrades.
• Keep core platform processor-agnostic and optimize processor integrations from mapping to settlement.
• Design for reliability and PCI: define SLOs, remove single points of failure, lead root-cause analyses, shrink PCI scope by design.
• Raise delivery velocity with AI-assisted development and security guardrails for AI-generated code.
