Job summary

Mars Snacking seeks an IP Counsel to lead patent strategy, prosecution, and freedom-to-operate analyses, partnering with R&D, Marketing, Digital Technologies, Commercial, and the Law Department. The role is based at Mars Snacking’s Global Innovation Center in Chicago with a hybrid schedule, generally onsite three to four days per week.

Requirements include a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, USPTO registration, and 5+ years of IP-related legal experience in a relevant field.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school with strong patent experience.
• Licensed to practice before the USPTO.
• Undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Food Science, Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.
• 5+ years IP-related legal experience; in-house experience is a plus.
• Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to interact with clients and business leaders.

Responsibilities

• Lead IP activities for Mars Snacking technology platforms, including drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications; perform freedom-to-operate analyses.
• Manage outside counsel to coordinate prosecution of global patent portfolios.
• Provide competitive intelligence and IP strategy counselling to assigned R&D, Marketing, and Business groups.
• Draft and negotiate IP-related contracts and terms (e.g., consulting, material transfer, research, joint development).
• Counsel on trade secrets and confidentiality matters.
• Develop IP training for innovation groups and business teams.
