Job summary

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America (MBRDNA) seeks an experienced IP attorney to lead the NA IP & Patents team, shaping strategy, prosecution, and licensing for US and cross-border rights. You will collaborate with global IP leaders and business units to secure robust protection.

The role is on-site in San Jose, CA or Atlanta, GA or Ann Arbor, MI, with travel as needed. Visa sponsorship is not available; compensation reflects education and experience.

Qualifications

• BS in engineering or science field.
• JD – Law Degree required.
• 10–12 years' experience as an IP attorney (firm, in-house, or both).
• Licensed attorney in a US state and registered to practice before the USPTO.
• Automotive or software IP experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the North American IP & Patents team.
• Hire, train, and develop IP team members.
• Assess patentability and scope of IP protection aligned with company strategy.
• Advise on IP strategy and coordinate with business units.
• Monitor third-party IP rights and advise on defense and licensing.
• Manage outside IP counsel for drafting and filing patents.
• Coordinate with global IP leaders and US policy teams.
• Support IP litigation and SEP issues, including licensing targets.
