Job summary

Lynker is seeking an Ionospheric Scientist and Modeling Lead to support NOAA SWPC by advancing ionosphere/thermosphere models and transitioning research to operations. You will coordinate model development, lead scientists and programmers, and communicate findings through publications and presentations.

The role requires a Ph.D. in a physical science or engineering field and at least five years in research or forecasting, with strong Fortran/Python skills and a track record in coordinating

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physical Sciences, Atmospheric Science, Space Physics, Engineering, or related field.
  • At least five years of research or operational forecasting experience.
  • Expertise in ionosphere/thermosphere modeling, scientific programming (Fortran/Python), model validation.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate scientists and programmers in a mission-focused R2O environment.

Responsibilities

  • Advance predictive models of ionosphere and atmosphere to improve space weather forecasts.
  • Identify scientific and technical innovations for SWPC forecasters and customers.
  • Assess and validate models to set SWPC priorities.
  • Guide transition of models from research to forecasting operations.
  • Pursue external capabilities to improve forecasting.
  • Present results through publications and conferences.
  • Coordinate the ionospheric modeling group at SWPC.
