Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with backend, integration, or API focus.
• Strong experience with modern, type-hinted Python.
• Experience building production integrations with third-party systems and APIs.
• Experience developing production APIs and backend services using FastAPI, Pydantic.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, authentication and authorization, webhooks, networking, databases.
• Experience with external APIs where you do not control upstream or downstream.
• Experience designing reliable data flows with retries, idempotency, rate limits.
• Strong debugging across multiple systems.
• Experience designing automated tests for APIs and integrations.
• Experience with Azure cloud and containerized apps.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, observability, and modern DevOps practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication with stakeholders.
• Ability to own technically complex projects from discovery to production.
• Comfort in a fast-moving startup environment with evolving integration patterns.
• Interest in improving healthcare through safe, thoughtful technology.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain integrations between UpDoc and health systems, EHRs, and platforms.
• Own integration projects end to end from discovery through deployment and maintenance.
• Partner with health system IT teams, EHR vendors, and partners to understand requirements and deploy integrations.
• Design and implement internal and external APIs and backend services using Python, FastAPI, and Pydantic.
• Work with healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR.
• Design secure data flows between UpDoc and external systems with attention to data integrity and privacy.
• Translate data/workflows between systems with different schemas and constraints.
• Build integrations that handle real-world failures: timeouts, retries, rate limits, partial data.
• Diagnose production integration issues using logs, traces, and API payloads.
• Establish monitoring and observability for integration reliability.
• Develop automated tests for APIs and integrations (unit/integration/contract/e2e).
• Build reusable integration components, tooling, and patterns for future deployments.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Product, Clinical, Security to support workflows.
• Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, deployment, and troubleshooting.
• Document integration architecture, data flows, decisions, and dependencies.
• Contribute to HIPAA, SOC 2 compliance as it relates to integrations.
