Job summary

Airswift is seeking a Senior Instrumentation Designer to support varied industrial projects with a strong Power sector focus. Remote work is possible, with potential office options in Reading, KS, Kansas City, MO, or Charlotte, NC, and a preference for candidates with Oil & Gas exposure.

You will develop instrumentation and controls designs, coordinate across teams, and ensure compliance with client specs and standards. This role emphasizes design delivery, drafting, and project execution.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in instrumentation, controls, or electrical design.
  • Power industry experience required.
  • Proficiency with SPI, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
  • Experience with SmartPlant 3D and 3D model reviews.
  • AVEVA E3D experience is a plus.
  • Strong fundamentals in instrumentation and controls.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Develop instrumentation and controls drawings and detailed designs.
  • Prepare and coordinate design documentation per project requirements.
  • Review sketches, specs, drawings to produce deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical input.
  • Support junior designers to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Perform routine calculations and design checks.
  • Coordinate drawings across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Conduct site walkdowns to verify existing conditions.
  • Deliver work within schedule and budgets with QA procedures.

Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Instrumentation Designer to support a variety of industrial projects, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience in the Power sector, in addition to traditional Oil & G os environments. This position can be based remotely or from the Reading, KS, Kansas City, MO, or Charlotte, NC offices.

In this role, you will be responsible for delivering instrumentation and controls design solutions while ensuring compliance with client specifications, industry standards, and project quality requirements. You will work both independently and collaboratively on small to mid-sized projects, contributing to design development, drafting activities, and project execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop instrumentation and controls drawings, layouts, plans, sections, elevations, and detailed designs using established drafting practices and standards.
  • Prepare and coordinate instrumentation and controls design documentation in accordance with project and client requirements.
  • Review and interpret sketches, specifications, reference drawings, and design data to produce accurate deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical input related to design, drafting, and compliance requirements.
  • Support and guide junior designers, ensuring quality and consistency across project deliverables.
  • Perform routine calculations and design checks required for drawing preparation.
  • Coordinate instrumentation and controls drawings across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Conduct site walkdowns as required to verify and document existing site conditions.
  • Deliver assigned work scopes within established schedules and budgets while adhering to quality assurance procedures.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in instrumentation, controls, or electrical design and drafting.
  • Experience within the Power industry is required; candidates with only traditional Oil & Gas experience may not be the best fit.
  • Proficiency with SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
  • Experience with SmartPlant 3D and participation in 3D model reviews.
  • Experience with AVEVA E3D is considered a plus.
  • Solid understanding of instrumentation and controls fundamentals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications
  • Degree or Diploma in Instrumentation Design and Drafting, or related discipline-specific training.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant design/drafting experience will also be considered.
