Job summary

Middough is seeking a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer in Cleveland to lead I&C design for diverse projects. You will collect data, perform calculations, and prepare documentation while coordinating with design staff, project management, and clients.

The role requires 10+ years in instrumentation and controls, a BS in engineering, and strong knowledge of NEC/ISA standards, DCS/PLC platforms, HMI, and AutoCAD. PE license preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline required.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience performing engineering analysis and design for instrumentation and controls.
  • Understanding of NEC/ISA standards.
  • Experience with PFDs, P&IDs, and control system architectures.
  • Experience with DCS/PLC platforms including HMI and reporting software.

Responsibilities

  • Design complete I&C solutions based on project scope definition.
  • Prepare project documentation including BOMs, calculations, data sheets, drawings, specifications, reports, and test plans.
  • Coordinate tasks with engineers, designers, and staff.
  • Perform technical bid evaluations and recommend best value design.
  • Lead field work and evaluate installations; perform problem-solving.
  • Present project information to internal and external client audiences.
  • Manage project scope, changes, and deliverables to meet budget and schedule.

Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer - Position and Responsibilities

As a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer (I&C) with Middough, you will collect and prepare data/information and perform detailed engineering calculations. The I&C Engineer will also interact with design staff, senior department personnel, project management, contractors, and our valued clients. The I&C Engineer will demonstrate technical and professional growth annually by maintaining active membership in professional organizations and participating in technical seminars and/or courses.

Responsibilities
  • Work on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects.
  • Design complete I&C solutions based on project scope definition.
  • Prepare project documentation including but not limited to bills of material, calculations, data sheets, detailed drawings, specifications, technical reports, and test plans.
  • Coordinate tasks with engineers, designers, and administrative staff.
  • Perform technical evaluation of bids and recommend best value design which meets client requirements for operability, reliability, maintainability, and safety.
  • Participate in safety reviews (i.e., HAZID, HAZOP).
  • Lead field work by evaluating installations and performing problem‑solving activities.
  • Perform calculation checks and vendor drawing reviews.
  • Serve as lead on single and multi‑discipline projects by estimating work hours, developing scope of work, and checking drawings.
  • Interact with other disciplines and suppliers to obtain pertinent information.
  • Manage the scope of the project work, address scope and work changes, adjust the project deliverables as necessary, and complete the project work based on the budget and scheduled time frame.
  • Present project information to both internal and external client audiences.
Education, Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline required.
  • Professional Engineer license (preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience performing engineering analysis and design for instrumentation and controls systems.
  • Understanding of NEC/ISA standards.
  • Strong skill set in understanding PFD's, P&ID's, and Cause & Effect Matrices.
  • Interface experience with DCS/PLC platforms including HMI and reporting software packages.
  • Strong background in control system architecture and interface solutions including configuration of switches, servers, and operator workstations.
  • Experience specifying field instrumentation and process analyzers for applications including basic process control, safety instrumented systems and fire and gas detection; includes development of installation details and loop drawings.
  • Experience with estimating engineering project costs.
  • Working knowledge of Smart Plant Instrumentation would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Databases and AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and attention to detail abilities.
  • Ability to multitask and organize for project efficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently walk, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop or kneel, bend or twist, use repeating motions that may include the wrists/hands/fingers and talk and hear.
  • Frequently use up‑close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Should not expect adverse environmental conditions within company offices.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as climbing ladders and/or stairs, extreme heat and/or cold, and/or poor air quality) if or when on‑site at a client facility. Noise levels may be moderate to high at various client sites, hearing protection may be required and/or provided.
  • Safety protections provided by the client and/or company are required to be used and followed.
  • May require occasional car or air travel to other company locations or client sites.
  • This position requires the candidate/employee to possess and maintain a valid driver's license in their state of residence and auto insurance coverage.
