Job summary

Middough seeks a Lead Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to lead design efforts and deliver detailed engineering analyses for client projects. You will develop specs, perform calculations, and guide the team through bid evaluation and documentation.

The role requires 8+ years in I&C or electrical engineering, familiarity with NEC/ISA, AutoCAD, and strong communication. This on-site position includes field work, occasional travel, and a hybrid-friendly work model depending on project needs.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree required (Engineering Technology or BS in engineering).
  • 8+ years of engineering and design experience in I&C or electrical.
  • Strong knowledge of PFDs, P&ID's, and Cause & Effect matrices.
  • Familiar with NEC/ISA standards.
  • EIT certification is a plus.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage project scope.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design engineer on multiple projects or as part of a larger design team.
  • Collect data, perform engineering calculations, and write reports.
  • Develop technical specs, data sheets, bid evaluations, and value design.
  • Prepare documentation: scopes of work, BOMs, instrument lists, datasheets, schedules.
  • Lead field work, check installations, and troubleshoot.
  • Review vendor drawings and perform estimation of hours.
  • Act as project lead for select projects including staffing and scope.
  • Coordinate with other departments and clients to obtain information.
  • Maintain project scope within budget and schedule; present updates to stakeholders.

Job description

Lead Instrumentation & Controls Engineer – Position and Responsibilities

As a Lead Instrumentation & Controls Engineer with Middough, you will collect and prepare data / information and perform detailed engineering calculations. In this role you will perform basic engineering design and provide analysis on complex or unique problems for review and approval by senior department personnel. The Lead I&C Engineer demonstrates technical / professional growth by maintaining active membership in professional organizations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work on multiple projects of various sizes at the same time, as lead design engineer or as member of a larger design team.
  • Collect and prepare data / information, perform detailed engineering calculations, and write formal engineering / technical reports.
  • Develop technical specifications & data sheets, perform technical evaluation of bids, and recommend best value design which meets client requirements for operability, reliability, maintainability, and safety.
  • Prepare project documentation and deliverables including but not limited to scopes of work, bills of material, instrument and IO lists, instrument datasheets, cable, and conduit schedules.
  • Lead field work by checking installations and problem‑solving activities.
  • Perform calculation checking and vendor drawing reviews.
  • Serve as Project Lead for select single‑discipline projects by estimating work hours, developing scope of work, making staffing recommendations, and checking drawings.
  • Interact with other departments and suppliers to obtain pertinent information.
  • Manage the scope of the project work, address scope and work changes, adjust the project deliverables as necessary, and complete the project work based on the budget and scheduled time frame.
  • Present project information internally to colleagues and externally to clients.
  • Work within given budget and schedule parameters, as well as develop engineering internal time estimates for engineering and design.
Education, Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Engineering Technology degree or Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline required.
  • 8+ years of engineering and design experiences in Instrumentation & Controls or Electrical.
  • Strong skill set in understanding PFD's, P&ID's, and Cause and Effect matrices.
  • Understanding of NEC/ISA standards.
  • EIT certification is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and attention to detail abilities.
  • Ability to multitask and organize for project efficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently walk, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop or kneel, twist and bend, use repeating motions that may include the wrists/hands/fingers and talk and hear.
  • Frequently use up‑close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Should not expect adverse environmental conditions within company offices.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as climbing ladders and/or stairs, extreme heat and/or cold, and/or poor air quality) if or when on‑site at a client facility. Noise levels may be moderate to high at various client sites, hearing protection may be required and/or provided. Safety protections provided by the client and/or company are required to be used and followed.
  • May require occasional car or air travel to other company locations or client sites.
  • This position requires the candidate/employee to possess and maintain a valid driver's license in their state of residence and auto insurance coverage.
