Job summary

Clarity Consultants is seeking a Senior Instructional Designer to build a structured onboarding and field-readiness program for Field Test Engineers. You will create on-the-job training, coach tools, and competency assessments to demonstrate technical readiness in a remote, contract role.

The project runs through December 2026 with potential extension. Expect collaboration with SMEs, detailed storyboards, and reusable training materials for about 60 engineers and future hires.

Qualifications

• Senior-level instructional design experience developing technical, hands-on, and performance-based training programs.
• Experience designing structured OJT programs, coach guides, task checklists, and observable competency assessments.
• Strong ability to interview technical SMEs and translate complex procedures into practical learning materials.
• Experience developing learning objectives, knowledge checks, performance rubrics, and job aids.

Job description

We are working with our client in the defense technology industry to locate an experienced Senior Instructional Designer to support a structured onboarding and field-readiness program for approximately 60 Field Test Engineers and future hires. The client is building a more consistent and measurable onboarding experience, replacing informal coaching with sequenced learning, structured field practice, and performance-based qualification assessments.

The Instructional Designer will develop technical instructional materials, structured on-the-job training (OJT), coach tools, self-paced learning, and competency assessments to help Field Test Engineers demonstrate technical readiness.

Responsibilities

• Translate the learning journey blueprint and approved task inventory into detailed instructional designs, storyboards, and structured field practice activities.
• Design short self-paced lessons and knowledge checks in collaboration with the Learning Developer.
• Develop technical job aids, OJT checklists, observation guides, and reusable coach toolkit materials.
• Create performance-based qualification assessments, competency rubrics, evidence-capture templates, remediation guidance, and reassessment tools.
• Collaborate with client SMEs to validate technical procedures, task steps, accuracy, and usability of field training materials.
• Incorporate technical review feedback, maintain version-controlled deliverables, and support pilot refinements and program launch.

Required Experience

• Senior-level instructional design experience developing technical, hands-on, and performance-based training programs.
• Demonstrated experience designing structured OJT programs, coach guides, task checklists, and observable competency assessments.
• Strong ability to interview technical SMEs and translate complex procedures and field operations into clear, practical learning materials.
• Experience developing learning objectives, knowledge checks, performance rubrics, technical job aids, and qualification assessments.

Preferred Experience

• Instructional design experience in aerospace, defense, energy, advanced manufacturing, industrial operations, or military technical training.
• Experience developing technical qualification or certification programs.
• Familiarity with the Systems Approach to Training (SAT), ADDIE, and safety-sensitive training environments.
