Montgomery College seeks a Full-time Senior Instructional Assistant in the Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering at Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. Work hours are Monday–Friday, 10:00 am–6:30 pm.

This is a Bargaining, Non-Exempt, Grade 25 position. Under supervision, the Senior Instructional Assistant will set up labs, coordinate daily operations, provide instructional support to faculty, and assist students and staff with laboratory activities and safety.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble/set-up and break-down laboratory experiments and demonstrations to support instructional objectives.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for laboratory work.
  • Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance or troubleshooting on laboratory equipment.
  • Dispose of waste chemicals and/or medical waste per hazardous waste regulations.
  • Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals and products used in laboratories.
  • Assist instructors and students during labs ensuring safety of setup and equipment.
  • May supervise student laboratory assistants.

Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, seekscandidates for a Full-time Senior Instructional Assistant in theDepartment of Natural Sciences and Engineering.

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 10:00 am – 6:30 pm.This is a Bargaining, Non-Exempt Status, Grade 25 position. Fornon-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary jobat Montgomery College.

Under supervision and/or direction, the senior instructionalassociate will maintain assigned instructional laboratory andsupport and coordinate the daily operations and activities. Thework involves setting up and organizing work areas for classroominstruction, and coordinating with and providing instructionalassistance services to faculty to ensure laboratory exercisesdemonstrate learning, scientific, and/or technical principles tosupport classroom instruction. Incumbents assist in providingtechnical assistance to students and faculty performing researchand accessing instructional resources. Plan activities, assessinventory and maintain supplies and materials, check/maintainequipment and assist with guiding students regarding proper use ofequipment. An incumbent follows specific guidelines developed byfaculty/supervisor in providing instructional support in thelaboratory.

Senior Instructional Assistant may specialize in specific academicdiscipline(s). This job profile is intended to capture generalizedessential functions of the collegewide role.

Primary contacts include college faculty, staff, andstudents.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assemble/set-up and break-down laboratory experiments,demonstrations, and practical exercises in accordance with guidancefrom the academic department in order to support instructionalobjectives.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents needed for laboratory work.
  • Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance or troubleshooting on specializedlaboratory equipment, if applicable.
  • Dispose of waste chemicals and/or special medical waste inaccordance with applicable hazardous waste regulations andprocedures, if applicable.
  • Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals/products used inlaboratories and laboratory results, if applicable.
  • Maintain/feed live organisms/biological specimens, ifapplicable.
  • Maintain laboratory areas, equipment storage, test equipment,tools, supply/stock rooms, etc.
  • Receive/unpack and put away deliveries of materials.
  • Ensure security of equipment storage and stock rooms.
  • Monitor/inventory equipment and supplies.
  • Inspect and test safety equipment and supplies.
  • Identify maintenance issues for reporting to appropriateauthorities.
  • Assist instructors and students during labs as necessary byensuring the safety of the laboratory set-up and associatedequipment.
  • Provide input as requested for updating laboratory preparationbooks and guidance.
  • May research equipment for laboratory use for input intopurchase.
  • May maintain statistics regarding student laboratory use andprepare reports and other written materials regarding operation oflaboratories.
  • May supervise student laboratory assistants.
  • Specific responsibilities may vary based on the academicdiscipline(s) associated with the laboratory.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related academic field.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training,certification and/or experience that provides the requiredknowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of thejob may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in theUnited States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Hiring Range:

$29.51 - $38.35 hourly. Initial salaryplacement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint ofthe range and is based on relevant candidate experience andinternal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $47.20hourly.

Montgomery College does not currently offer voluntary remote work,or withhold payroll taxes for states outside of its tax reciprocityagreements. As a result, employees must reside in, and perform anyapproved telework from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, WestVirginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania. Employees residing in otherstates at the time of hire are not eligible for telework until theyhave secured a permanent residence in one of the states listedabove.
