Job summary

Whatnot is hiring an Infrastructure Engineer to own the path between customers and code, spanning edge, DNS, private connectivity, service mesh, and TLS. You’ll instrument all layers so incidents are resolved quickly with evidence, and partner with Reliability, Platform Engineering, and Security.

This hands-on, software-first role emphasizes controllers, extensions, and automation to keep networking boring yet robust as traffic scales globally.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience preferably running the network behind high-traffic applications.
• 3+ years of hands-on Istio and Envoy experience with tuned configurations for different use cases.
• Experience writing custom Envoy extensions when configuration alone wasn’t enough.
• Deep Kubernetes networking knowledge, including CNI, pod/service networking, and ingress.

Responsibilities

• Write controllers, extensions, and automation to own the network layer end-to-end.
• Instrument every layer of a request and land signals in existing observability tooling.
• Collaborate with Reliability, Platform Engineering, and Security to secure and optimize traffic paths.
• Design for failure with tooling that makes changes safe and rehearsed before incidents.
• Support edge, DNS, private connectivity, service meshes, TLS, and internal access for high performance workloads.
