We are seeking a Virtualization Infrastructure Engineer to support critical infrastructure upgrade initiatives, including the enterprise-wide migration to VMware vSphere 8 and the implementation of vulnerability patches. This role is essential to maintaining compliance with internal security standards, minimizing operational risks, and ensuring the long-term stability of our virtualized environments.
This is a 6-month contract with potential for extension. The role will support second-shift operations (11:00 AM – 8:00 PM ET) to align with scheduled maintenance windows and ensure efficient handoffs during after-hours infrastructure activities. This position is focused primarily on planning and executing upgrades, with some involvement in escalated troubleshooting and cross-team coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
- VMware vSphere 8 Upgrades: Execute planned infrastructure upgrades across Cisco UCS and Dell platforms, focusing on patching, stability, and version control.
- Escalation Point: Serve as a senior escalation point for lower-level engineers during scheduled maintenance and infrastructure operations.
- Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis: Support initial diagnostics related to hardware issues and basic virtualization failures, escalating deeper technical challenges as needed.
- Infrastructure Coordination: Collaborate with application and hardware teams to plan, execute, and document change activities in alignment with compliance deadlines.
- Hardware Support: Perform basic configuration and maintenance tasks on underlying infrastructure, including Cisco UCS and Dell hardware.
- Scripting & Automation: Use PowerShell or PowerCLI to assist with routine tasks and system updates.
- ServiceNow Ticket Management: Open, update, and close incidents and service requests in accordance with internal change control processes.
- Documentation & Scheduling: Maintain and follow established documentation for mid-upgrades, troubleshooting procedures, and escalation paths.
- Operational Readiness: Help ensure infrastructure changes are executed within expected timelines to meet internal MRIA audit deadlines.
Qualifications:
- 6+ years of experience supporting VMware infrastructure in enterprise environments
- Strong understanding of VMware vSphere 6.7, 7, and 8
- Working knowledge of Cisco UCS and Dell server hardware
- Ability to conduct root cause analysis for standard virtualization issues and escalate as needed
- Proficiency in PowerShell/PowerCLI scripting for system administration
- Hands-on experience working with ServiceNow or other ITSM tools for ticket lifecycle management
- Strong understanding of planned maintenance scheduling and change documentation practices
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline
Preferred Experience:
- Certifications such as VCP-DCV, VCTA-DCV, CCNA, or related credentials
- Previous exposure to infrastructure environments in financial services or regulated industries
- Familiarity with RAID configurations, system firmware upgrades, and server lifecycle management
- Strong organizational and coordination skills; ability to work independently during off-peak shifts
- Experience supporting Windows and Unix systems in virtualized environments
