Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to support and enhance a hybrid infrastructure environment in the Richmond, VA area. The role requires hands-on work with Windows Server, cloud infrastructure, PowerShell automation, security, patching, server migrations, networking, and production application support.

Key technologies include Java, .NET, Oracle, SQL Server, Microsoft Dynamics, and warehouse platforms.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Windows Server Administration.
• Strong Windows Server administration experience.
• PowerShell scripting and automation expertise.
• Experience with enterprise patch management tools such as SCCM/MECM or WSUS.
• Experience supporting hybrid on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience with Azure and/or AWS environments.
• Experience performing server upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure modernization.
• Strong server security, hardening, vulnerability remediation, and access controls knowledge.
• Strong networking fundamentals: OSI model, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP/HTTPS.
• Experience with production applications and enterprise environments.

Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, and optimize Windows Server environments across on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
• Perform Windows Server upgrades, patching, testing, troubleshooting, and system updates.
• Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate infrastructure tasks.
• Plan and execute server and workload migrations from on-premises to cloud.
• Implement server security configurations and DR measures.
• Conduct vulnerability assessments and remediation activities.
• Manage enterprise patching with SCCM/MECM or similar tools.
• Monitor infrastructure performance, availability, and health.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production infrastructure issues.
• Support backup operations and Disaster Recovery processes.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Windows Server, cloud infrastructure, PowerShell automation, security, patching, server migrations, networking, and production application support.

The successful candidate will work across mission-critical enterprise systems and support technologies including Java, .NET, Oracle, SQL Server, Microsoft Dynamics, and warehouse platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, and optimize Windows Server environments across on-premises and cloud infrastructure.

• Perform Windows Server upgrades, patching, testing, troubleshooting, and system updates.

• Perform vulnerability assessment remediation and security compliance activities.

• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production infrastructure issues.

• Support backup operations, restoration activities, and Disaster Recovery (DR) processes.

• Develop and improve DR strategies for mission-critical systems.

• Provide advanced server-level support for applications built on Java, .NET, Oracle, SQL, Microsoft Dynamics, and warehouse technologies.

• Troubleshoot application, middleware, server, and connectivity issues across hybrid environments.

• Apply strong knowledge of the OSI model and network protocols to diagnose infrastructure and application connectivity problems.

• Collaborate with application, security, networking, infrastructure, and operations teams.

• Support application deployments, infrastructure enhancements, upgrades, and migrations.

• Communicate technical issues and solutions effectively with technical and business stakeholders.

Required Skills & Experience

• 8 years of experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Windows Server Administration.

• Strong hands-on experience with Windows Server administration.

• Strong PowerShell scripting and automation experience.

• Experience with SCCM/MECM, WSUS, or enterprise patch management tools.

• Experience supporting hybrid on-premises and cloud infrastructure.

• Hands-on experience with Azure and/or AWS environments.

• Experience performing server upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure modernization.

• Strong understanding of server security, hardening, vulnerability remediation, and access control.

• Experience with infrastructure monitoring and performance troubleshooting.

• Experience with backup and Disaster Recovery technologies.

• Strong networking fundamentals, including the OSI model, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP/HTTPS, and network troubleshooting.

• Experience supporting production applications and enterprise environments.

• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Microsoft certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate or related certifications.

• Microsoft Windows Server certifications.

• Networking certifications such as Cisco CCNA or equivalent.

• Experience supporting large government or enterprise infrastructure environments.

• Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, Microsoft Dynamics, Java, and .NET application environments.

Work Location

This position is based in the Richmond, VA metro area.

Local candidates are preferred. Candidates who are not local must be willing to relocate to the Richmond, VA area.

After initial training and knowledge transfer, the selected candidate will be required to work onsite 1--2 days per week.
