Job summary

American University, a student-centered research institution in Washington, DC, seeks an Information Security Architect to lead enterprise security strategy, architecture, and engineering across cloud, on-premises, and research computing environments.

Reporting to the CISO, you will drive security engineering innovation, automate security controls, and mentor engineers while aligning with regulatory requirements and institutional priorities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent; 8–10 years of cybersecurity or related experience.
• Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise security architectures in complex organizations.
• Extensive experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation technologies (Terraform, OpenTofu, CloudFormation, Bicep, Ansible, Git, CI/CD).
• Experience with security operations, detection engineering, SOAR platforms, and secure research computing environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain enterprise security architectures and design patterns; lead reviews for infrastructure, cloud, networking, identity, data, and applications.
• Design and implement automation and DevSecOps practices; define standards and roadmaps for security platforms.
• Lead security assessments of university technologies, cloud services, applications, vendors, and third-party solutions; advise on risk and mitigation.
• Mentor Security Engineers and drive security program maturity; contribute to metrics and reporting.
