Job summary

NYC Health + Hospitals seeks an Associate Counsel – Level C to lead high-stakes medical malpractice defense within the Claims and Litigation Division of its Office of Legal Affairs. This senior role demands strategic trial leadership, complex fact analysis, and coordination with clinical experts and hospital leadership.

The attorney will manage cases from inception through trial, oversee junior team members, and influence risk management decisions while maintaining public service

Qualifications

• Must be admitted and active in the New York State Bar.
• Two permissible paths: Path A—3 years in listed areas; Path B—2 years plus 2 years of progressive managerial experience.
• 10+ years of medical malpractice defense experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop robust defense strategies for complex medical malpractice claims.
• Collaborate with medical experts to evaluate causation and damages.
• Assess exposure and advise on settlements versus trial decisions.
• Prepare physicians and other providers for depositions and trial testimony.
• Draft dispositive motions and other substantive pleadings.
• Supervise junior litigators and present case status to leadership.
• Partner with Risk Management on litigation-related issues.
