Job summary

Valero is seeking a Principal Process Engineer for hydroprocessing in San Antonio, TX. The role leads multi-disciplinary projects to improve unit performance and margin, mentoring engineers and coordinating startup support for critical units.

You will work with Operations, Maintenance, and Projects, driving best practices and technical rigor while aligning with site and corporate priorities. The position is salaried exempt with travel requirements.

Qualifications

• BS in Chemical Engineering; 15 years refining process engineering with startups and troubleshooting.
• Willing to work on-site at Valero San Antonio; travel up to 25%.
• TWIC credential or ability to obtain TWIC; on-site support and after-hours availability.

Responsibilities

• Identify high-impact improvement opportunities and develop scope and value cases.
• Lead catalyst selections and technical work across multiple functions.
• Provide on-site startup support for critical units.
• Mentor engineers and advise operations on operating windows.
• Lead high-level troubleshooting of complex unit upsets.
• Approve hydroprocessing catalyst purchases with sign-off authority.
• Collaborate with Project Development to progress scope through milestones.
• Contribute to corporate standards and process safety reviews.
• Coach early and mid-career engineers to foster rigor and safety.
• Share lessons learned across units to drive value.
