Job summary

University of Maryland seeks an HVAC Chief – Steam at the IBBR Facilities Operations. The role covers maintenance of a large 700 HP high-pressure steam plant, steam distribution, and cooling facilities, with focus on steam piping, steam traps, condensate systems, and control valves.

The senior mechanic coordinates repairs and may supervise subcontractors, working across mechanical, electrical, and structural trades to ensure a safe, reliable laboratory and research environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ten years of progressively responsible experience in HVAC-related trades.
• Two years supervisory experience of journey level mechanics in these trades.
• Maryland Class C driver’s license with <6 points and Universal EPA CFC certification.
• Knowledge of OSHA, NEC, and HVAC system principles and practices.
• Ability to read schematics and prepare written reports.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and service on large HVAC systems including steam boilers and distribution.
• Coordinate repairs and facility renewal projects to extend equipment life.
• Supervise subcontractors and train maintenance staff as needed.
• Work across mechanical, electrical, and structural trades to ensure safe operation.
• Read, interpret blueprints and contract documents; document activities and test results.
