Job summary

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in Fairfax County is seeking a Senior HVAC Technician to operate, maintain, repair, and install HVAC systems across campus facilities. This full-time role requires supervising contracted work, ensuring economical and safe service, and coordinating with campus staff on emergencies.

Travel between campuses may be required. Applicants should have commercial HVAC training, the ability to work independently, and experience with building management controls;

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of maintenance, repair and replacement of HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to repair and maintain HVAC including boilers, air-handlers, pumps, valves, controllers and systems.
  • Ability to follow verbal instruction and work independently.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in tight spaces.
  • Unrestricted valid driver’s license in good standing.
  • Commercial HVAC training.
  • Experience in energy management and mechanical systems.
  • Experience with multiple automatic controls/BCM or building management systems.
  • Experience reading mechanical drawings and blueprints.
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of chillers and heat pumps.

Job Description

General Description: As the Senior HVAC Technician, this position will be required to perform operation, maintenance, repair and installation of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning [ HVAC ] systems and other related components. If needed, campus may vary. This position is not eligible for telework. Duties and Tasks:

  • Supervise contracted HVAC work.
  • Maintain HVAC equipment and systems, correct problems, and perform new HVAC installations in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Provide the most economical and safest HVAC service to campus.
  • Complete work orders with priorities approved by immediate supervisor.
  • Independently handle emergency work on weekends and holidays.
  • Lead other HVAC technicians and other trades staff with priorities approved by immediate supervisor, handle emergency work on weekends and holidays
  • Perform maintenance work, troubleshoot and repair systems.
  • Support emergency operations and take lead with campuses HVAC contractors.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

KSAs:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of maintenance, repair and replacement of HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to repair and maintain a variety of equipment to include, but not limited to, air conditioning, boilers, air-handlers, fan coil units, pumps, valves, controllers (both DDC & Pneumatic), motors, starters, refrigeration and automated control systems.
  • Ability to follow verbal instruction and work independently.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision and make sound decisions independently.
  • Proficient in the use of hand and electrical tools, as well as service manuals and all diagnostic equipment related to the trade.
  • Ability to lift 50 Ibs. on a regular basis.
  • Ability to function in close quarters or cramped environments.
  • Ability to operate all required equipment.
  • Unrestricted Valid driver’s license in good standing with good driving record
  • Commercial HVAC Training.
  • Experience in energy management and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment and preventive maintenance operation.
  • Experience in multiple Automatic controls/building management computerized controls or equivalent applicable experience or training.
  • Experience working from Mechanical drawings and building blueprints
  • Experience on operation and maintenance of chiIIer, heat pumps, air handlers, geothermal system
