Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a crew leader responsible for coordinating highway and bridge maintenance, supervising crew members, and ensuring all work is accurately recorded in HMMS. The role involves operating a range of medium to heavy equipment and coordinating safety practices on site.

Experience includes at least 2 years in related work, a valid driver's license, and CDL Class A within six months.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of related work experience.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• CDL Class A within six months of placement is required.

Responsibilities

• Serves as crew leader coordinating construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads/bridges within a county and records work in HMMS.
• Assists crew foreman and performs skilled manual labor and operates medium/heavy equipment on state highway system work.
• Works on driveways, shoulders and slopes, ditches, drainage structures, and driveway installations.
• Operates equipment such as aggregate spreader, belt loader, front-end loader, tandem dump truck, backhoe, dozer, lowboy tractor, and tractor with ditcher.
• Assists in devising a schedule for maintenance work.
• Quantifies daily records of work and materials; maintains HMMS records and requests/complaints.
• Instructs crew on safety practices including flagging, PPE, vehicle safety, and hazards.
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices per SCDOT manuals.
• Conducts safety inspections on vehicles and equipment.
• Monitors preventive maintenance to extend equipment life.
• Maintains crew item records and supplies them timely.
• Operates salt brine anti-icing equipment and snow plow/sand spreader.
• Assists in emergency/inclement weather operations; may be on-call or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
