Job summary

City of Garland is hiring a Heavy Duty Fleet Mechanic to repair and maintain all levels of heavy shop vehicles and equipment, including refuse trucks and trailers. You will lead other mechanics in diagnosing and servicing diesel engines and aftertreatment, tires, and hydraulics, using Cummins software.

Requirements include 5 years related experience, 3 Truck ASE Certifications (plus 3 more within 2 years), and possession of basic hand tools.

Qualifications

• 1 year advanced study past high school or equivalent.
• 5 years related experience in heavy-duty repair.
• 3 Truck ASE Certifications required; 3 additional AS certifications planned.
• Must own basic hand and air tools and be familiar with heavy‑duty diagnostics.
• Experience with Diesel/Aftertreatment and hydraulic systems required.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance on heavy trucks and equipment including refuse, front/ rear/ side loaders and haul trucks.
• Oversee repairs and maintenance performed by mechanics.
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines and aftertreatment.
• Inspect tires and wheels; service and rotate tires; document follow-up checks.
• Order parts as needed and maintain a safe, clean fleet shop.
• Respond to road calls and coordinate safe repair work; work varying shifts including nights and weekends.
