Job summary

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department) is seeking a Supervising Special Officer to oversee, train and evaluate security personnel across the agency’s facilities. You will direct patrols, inspect posts and ensure compliance with procedures and reporting requirements.

This leadership role emphasizes discipline, coordination of operations, and ensuring safety across NYC Health Department locations.

Qualifications

• A four-year high school diploma or equivalent and one year of full-time experience in law enforcement, protection or security.
• Incumbents must satisfy the training requirements established by the State of New York for Peace Officers and obtain certification.
• Once obtained, this certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

• Review work performance of Special Officers and conduct evaluations.
• Disciplinary matters pertaining to direct reports.
• Direct and train subordinates in their duties and responsibilities.
• Assign patrols and review patrol sheets from officers.
• Inspect Special Officers posts and other work assigned.
• Perform uniform and equipment inspection for proper attire and equipment.
• Patrol Health Department facilities and surrounding areas to maintain order.
• Prepare, review and submit detailed incident reports to superiors.
• Issue summonses to violators and testify in court on arrests/summonses.
• Maintain logbooks and memo books up to date.
• Generate post orders and ensure coverage at all locations.
• Visit site locations and ensure daily field reports are submitted.
• Approve, review and adjust time sheets for leave, heat days, overtime.
• Work with assigned Special Officer to ensure reports meet trainings.
