Job description

About the job

About Flyby:

Flyby Robotics (https://www.flybyrobotics.com) builds drones with massively powerful GPU processing capabilities. Our team is crafting American-made drones that serve as programmable platforms for applications in machine learning, data capture, and AI-controlled operations. We envision a future where drones computing trillions of operations per second are deployed across the Western world with transformative impact across critical infrastructure, energy, frontier research, and national security. We are backed by top AI/hardware investors, including Neo, MaC Ventures, Naval Ravikant (AngelList founder), among others.

The Role:

You'll work with a team of engineers from Nvidia, US Navy NAVAIR, Sandia National Labs, and Yale to develop PCBs for the F-11 drone. We’re looking for experienced electrical engineers who will design and validate critical drone components, including battery management systems, GPS, power boards, and carrier boards.

What You'll Do:

  • Design schematics and PCB layouts for critical drone subsystems, including battery management systems, power boards, GPS modules, and carrier boards.

  • Select and validate components for high-reliability, high-performance drone applications while balancing power, thermal, and space constraints.

  • Collaborate with mechanical and firmware engineers to integrate new systems into the F-11.

  • Work closely with contract manufacturers to support DFM (design for manufacturability).

  • Extensively document the design, testing, validation, and revision of PCBs.

Core Requirements:

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience in an electrical engineering role.

  • Direct prior work experience with shipped components relating to battery management systems, GPS, or carrier boards for drones, electric cars, defense equipment, or humanoid robots.

  • Strong proficiency in component selection, schematic design, and PCB layout (Altium Designer).

  • Experience working with high-speed, high-interference data lines, including USB 3.0.

  • Able to commute or relocate to Los Angeles, CA.

Nice to have:

  • Component sourcing with strict compliance, such as aerospace or defense.

  • Experience with RF design, including antennas, radios, and communication systems.

  • Knowledge of cable design and manufacturing.

  • Familiarity with different communication protocols, including I2C, CAN, UART, etc.

  • Ability to write low-level firmware for MCUs (STM32s, ESP32s, Atmega, etc.)

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $160,000 per year annual salary.

  • 0.5% equity via stock options depending on the candidate's experience.

  • Company holiday calendar and unlimited PTO.

  • Company group health insurance plans.
