Job Description:
Our client, a Midwest-based life and disability insurer,has forged lasting relationships with distribution partners and group policyholders. Through collaboration and deep expertise in group life, disability, worksite and reinsurance products, they deliver highly tailored solutions that meet the needs of their customers. They are current seeking a remote Senior Group Life Underwriter to join their team.
Responsibilities:
- Perform risk appraisals to maximize revenue and minimize risk in accordance with underwriting guidelines.
- Evaluate and rate prospects, sold cases, plan change amendments and renewals through analysis of group’s risk characteristics.
- Ensure premium income accurately reflects risk, and that contracts meet legal and company standards.
- Manage assigned groups to promote retention and profitability.
- Monitor and implement rate and benefit changes to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of contract provisions, OCI statues, insurance lawsand mandated benefits.
- Collaboratewith internal teams - marketing, actuarial, legal, systems, billing, administration and claims - on plan changes and coverage extensions.
- Respond to inquiries from policyholders, sales teams and internal departments, providing technical explanations and policy interpretations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, reinsurers and clients.
- Document underwriting decisions, including rate calculations, conversations and agreements.
- Lead or contribute to special projects and provide innovation solutions as needed.
- Independently handlecomplex cases within assigned authority limits (up to 2,000 lives and up to $1,000,000 earned annual premium); escalate larger cases to management.
- Mentorand support associate underwriters to enhance team productivity and efficiency.
- Provide training to underwriters, sales teams, brokers and clients.
- Apply knowledge of formulas, trending, reserving procedures, and claims allocation to create exhibits and make informed underwriting decisions.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with leadership, sales teams, third-party administrations, reinsurers and other stakeholders.
- Work effectively both independently and as a part of a team.
- Apply sound judgement whenmaking exceptions to promote business retention and acquisition.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in a group life and disability underwriting environment
- Strong understanding of group insurance underwriting concepts and benefit funding methodologies
- Periodic travel may be required.
- Bachelor’s degree required; math, statistics or insurance-related degree (preferred)
PayRange:
The anticipated pay range for this position is $70,000 - $90,000 annually.
