Job summary

Umbra seeks a Flight Software Engineer to develop embedded flight software for Umbra missions, using Rust or C/C++. You will specify requirements, design software architecture, and implement code, while leading integration and testing and mentoring peers. The role emphasizes documentation and ensuring flight software interfaces with hardware.

The position is on-site in Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA or Arlington, VA or Reston, VA, with opportunities to contribute to mission-critical space systems.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of high-reliability software development with Rust or C/C++.
• 1+ years developing concurrent code with asynchronous Rust.
• 3+ years of embedded software development with Rust or C/C++.
• Experience on embedded ARM cores supporting SoC architectures in Linux, RTOS, or bare-metal environments.
• Strong understanding of processor architecture and performance optimization.
• Experience leading software development processes (VCS, CI/CD, bug tracking, design docs).

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary team to design, develop, and maintain reliable flight and payload software.
• Implement software to meet requirements and manage interfaces with spacecraft subsystems and ground hardware.
• Develop command and control software for spacecraft flight operations and payloads.
• Participate in test campaigns from unit to system level testing.
• Create and maintain documentation for software operation and interfaces.
• Lead software development processes and perform peer code reviews.
