Job summary

Alpaca, a US-headquartered provider of brokerage infrastructure, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Margin & Risk team within Prime Engine. You will own architecture across portfolio and intraday margin, options risk, and crypto risk controls, building real-time, low-latency systems that protect customers and partners.

You will mentor engineers, review designs, and collaborate with product, operations, and compliance.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of backend or distributed-systems experience; ownership matters.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture and technical roadmap for margin and risk across asset classes.
• Design and build services translating margin methodologies into correct, testable systems.
• Lead real-time risk enforcement on the order path with latency and accuracy in mind.
• Drive reliability and performance of team services, including throughput and recovery.
• Collaborate with Product, Brokerage Operations, Compliance, and adjacent teams to define interfaces and boundaries.
• Set standards for correctness in a financial system: transactional integrity, idempotency, and controlled rollouts.
• Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and raise engineering quality as the team grows.
• Act as escalation point for production margin and risk issues and drive durable prevention after incidents.
