Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a GIS Supervisor to lead administrative and technical activities ensuring GIS hardware and software align with programs and policy directives.

The role requires extensive GIS knowledge, coordination of data cabling, vendor contracts, and planning system development with subordinate staff. It is a supervisory level position performed mainly in an office setting.

Qualifications

• Supervising or lead experience in GIS/IT environments, including training and reviewing coworkers.
• Experience creating/editing GIS databases (Esri, ArcGIS, MapInfo).
• Maintaining GIS databases with spatial analysis and data extraction.
• Experience with database reporting software (Crystal Reports, ArcGIS data reporting).

Responsibilities

• Maintain and create department records and reports, attend meetings, and support policy changes.
• Enter/modify GIS records in databases and maps using coordinates and tabular data.
• Update complex records in GIS databases (roads, parcels, zoning) with precise data entry.
• Collaborate on cross-department projects, track progress, and communicate status.
• Supervise staff by assigning work, providing feedback and training.
• Provide training to ensure compliance with procedures and standards.
